Partner Spotlight: Perfectly Paired Pitties

Our 2024 partnership with the incredible Perfectly Paired Pitties Rescue (aka P3) — a rescue that will celebrate its first birthday this May! — began in an unusual way. Originally, we fulfilled their grant request specifically to help a dog who was then known as Jed, who’d been at the Prince George’s County shelter for three months, enduring an untreated fractured leg that entire time. P3 was at the time a brand-new rescue, just about six months old, but they’d already earned respect in the area. Like one of our other 2024 partners, Laila’s Legacy, P3 primarily pulls dogs from Prince George’s County, MD, where there is strict BSL (check out Pet Unity Project to learn more and support the efforts to change the law this year). Dogs identified as “pit bulls” at the Prince George’s County shelter must be fostered or adopted outside the county, putting up yet another barrier to them making it out alive. We were excited to see a new, pit-specific rescue saving lives in the region.

Jed (later known as Doc, and now as Lunchbox 😂) ended up not needing the orthopedic surgery it was originally suspected he would, so our grant was able to be spread across the care of several P3 rescue pups’ medical bills. We remain thrilled to be part of their stories and support P3 in their incredible first year — in 10 months, they’ve saved 75 dogs! Here are the stories of the four P3 dogs who received Hansel Help funding 💙.

First up, the pup that started it all. This special guy is a dog of many names (from shelter to rescue to his forever home) and many stories, and much social media fame! Known as Jed at the shelter, he was rescued on his euthanasia deadline in September. His first foster family changed his name to the adorable Doc McStuffins. He needed patience, a lot of rest, and repeated X-rays, but ultimately vets decided that was the better way to proceed than surgery after he’d been sitting with his fractured leg so long. We helped cover over $2,500 of his medical bills. Once he finally got the all clear, he made things official with his foster-to-adopt family, who gave him yet another adorable name!!! Next is 6-year-old Lolo, who also had quite the medical journey. P3 rescued her in May, before we partnered together, and we were happy to support over $2k of her remaining medical bills. Sarah from P3 shares "She was pulled from the PG urgent list [and] within a few hours of being in foster, we found out she couldn't breathe and took her to the ER where she was diagnosed with double pneumonia, a collapsed lung, and a broken tooth. Lolo has been undergoing treatment since. having X-rays every few weeks along with a variety of antibiotics. We finally got the OK in September that she could have the surgery to remove the tooth and be spayed, making her finally eligible for adoption."

During this process, she spent time in an amazing medical foster home and moved to her foster-to-adopt family when she was no longer contagious. In October, when she was finally healthy enough to be officially adopted, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house! Her new family includes two bulldog siblings and humans who adore her and take her on the adventures all shelter dogs deserve.

Cutie Tiny may look like a puppy, but she’s actually full grown, around 2! We were able to help with almost $1k of her medical bills for her ear and skin infections. Seeing her sweet photos with Santa while she was in foster was truly one of the highlights of my year, and he made her holiday wish come true — she was adopted in late November! Her forever home is complete with a pittie brother for her to play with.

Last but certainly not least, we have STILL ADOPTABLE Kiyu! Hansel Help supported her hernia surgery and treatment for ringworm cysts. Here’s what her adoption profile has to say about this gorgeous 2-year-old:

“Fully healed now, Kiyu is ready to explore the world and find her furever family — ideally an active family, who will take her for long walks and allow her to be the star athlete she is! If you're looking for the perfect size girl, who loves playing, fetching and sometimes falling asleep with her stuffy, Kiyu is the pup for you!”
