Sweet Sunny was about 14 years old and had a sarcoma pressing against his lungs and rib cage. California's The Pitty Committee and his amazing foster family wanted to give him the best life and care possible despite his diagnosis. We covered the cost of an oncology visit and surgical consultation for him, because he so deserved a better life. He was found abandoned, tied to a light post and wearing a muzzle, overheating in the LA sun. He ended up with an amazing hospice family and lived with them for almost a year before peacefully crossing the rainbow bridge. We are so comforted to know the last months of his life were the loving, treat-and-toy-filled ones he deserved!
Sunny
J’adore Dior! This girl has the saddest face but the sweetest soul. At only a year old, she was on her second stay at Brooklyn ACC (found stray and reclaimed by her owner the first time, but not this time). She was starting to get depressed in the shelter, but a rescue broke her outta there and we sent some Hansel Help to say thanks! They said “She is doing wonderful in foster. She is everything we knew she was PLUS.” Ooh la la! Here’s to a fabulous future for this girl.
Dior
This sweet senior boy is Patrick! He was surrendered to SEAACA Shelter in Downey, CA when his owner was evicted and he was urgently at risk for euthanasia until Concerned Citizens Animal Rescue stepped in and saved the day. We sent a small donation to help with his vet care. He went straight from the shelter to the vet to have a mass removed and had to go back after his incision reopened. Once he heals, he will be a lovely companion who loves people, treats, and belly rubs. Good with cats, not as good with male dogs and needs a slow intro to female dogs. Let Patrick be your star!
Patrick
Jake was found tied up in a stairwell in an apartment building and was fearful at the Brooklyn shelter, actually living in the office and too nervous to leave! He was at risk for euthanasia because of his behavior and is a prime example of a great dog who could thrive and benefit so much from training and an experienced home. Long Island Pit Stop seemed to agree, and saved his life! He’s now doing fabulously in his foster home and described by the rescue as “super chill.” We, however, are anything but chill when we look at those brown eyes and forehead wrinkles. Here’s to Jake’s next chapter!
Jake
Charlotte is a shy sweetie! This approx. 6-year-old girl was very fearful at Brooklyn ACC after being abandoned at a playground and also needed some follow-up care for her skin issues. We sent some Hansel Help when a rescue saved this lovely lady, who is cuddly and very affectionate with people she knows, and she’s now safe in a home in PA!
Charlotte
Smoke is another great pup we’ve provided a small Hansel Help donation for. A rescue saved him and his foster was a foster fail, so he already has a forever home! He was found stray and brought to Brooklyn ACC emaciated. He’s estimated to be about 6 years old and deserves to spend the rest of his years being spoiled!
Smoke
Who wouldn’t want Candy? We simply don’t understand, but we are so glad this girl got out of SEAACA shelter alive. It was a close one! She was abandoned by a family who claimed they found her stray, but volunteers believe she was their dog. She needs some medical care (injured tail, diarrhea, kennel cough) so we pledged some Hansel Help if a rescue could step up and save her life. Thankfully, California-based Healing Hounds Rescue was able to swoop in to save her at the last minute! PSST…SEE AN UPDATE ON CANDY IN HER FOREVER HOME HERE.
Candy
Samson has one of the best faces and some of the prettiest eyes we’ve ever seen! He was at risk for euthanasia at Brooklyn ACC after his human had to surrender him after they were evicted and no longer had the resources to care for him. They repeatedly called to check on their beloved boy and left notes that he can be shy with new people and dogs but is a happy, friendly dude with those he knows, including children. He loves car rides, playing, and being cozy in bed. We pledged a small donation to help stop his story from ending at the shelter, and AmsterDog Rescue saved him and ensured it wouldn’t! We’re so in love with this gorgeous boy.
Samson
Meet Dozer, who was saved by Southern California's Healing Hounds Rescue. We sent a small Hansel Help donation to assist with this approx. 3-year-old boy's many medical expenses. He needed surgery to remove some tumors and was on antibiotics for a sinus infection. Dozer was saved at the last minute from a kill shelter in San Jacinto, CA and apparently arrived there wearing a chain that had to be removed with bolt cutters. While Dozer unfortunately crossed the rainbow bridge after his surgery, we are so grateful his last days were spent knowing love and kindess.
Dozer
On March 9, 2024, we helped sponsor the first pit bulls-only flight by the amazing Wings Of Rescue, an organization that flies animals from areas of need (be they areas of overpopulation, natural disaster, or war) to safe foster and forever homes. 23 pitties from the Town Of Hempstead Animal Shelter made the flight from Long Island to Bellingham, WA, where they will be in the wonderful care of The Pittie Project rescue.
Wings Of Rescue
NYC-based Hearts & Bones Rescue received a large Hansel Help grant with the specific goal of allowing them to save more pit bulls from NYCACC. Flip Flop was an emergency behavioral case and one of their first rescues. He was deteriorating in his kennel and at risk for euthanasia. Now he'll be able to receive the training he needs and deserves in a safe space!
Flip Flop
Rainy was another one of Hearts & Bones Rescue's first saves with our partnership; though Rainy was adopted by her foster family so fast, the rescue didn’t end up needing to use funding for her! This small girl is described as happy and friendly. See more about Rainy in her forever home here!
Rainy
Meet Buddy, who was saved at the last minute by LA’s incredible Mutt Scouts from the North Central Shelter euthanasia list. He’s 9 years old, a sweet old dude who’s also great with other dogs. Because of his age, it’s not surprising he also has some medical needs (heart murmur, skin masses, arthritis, and hip dysplasia). We sent some Hansel Help to assist, but the rescue will definitely need more donations to cover his care if you’re able to help out and as charmed by Buddy as we are. Relieved to say he’s now in a loving foster home and getting the care he needs!
Buddy
Camille was saved from the euthanasia list at California’s SEAACA shelter at the last minute by new pit bull-focused organization Miko’s Rescue Mission! We sent along a small Hansel Help pledge to boost her chances and help get her started in her new life. Her shelter notes said that she bit her finder’s dog then redirected on the human, but the officer who picked her up said she was a nice girl and not aggressive, and she wasn’t reactive at the shelter. She was clearly scared when found but is gentle and calm when she feels comfortable and safe!
Camille
Meet Starbright and make a wish…although our wish for her has already come true! She’s been rescued by NY-based Adore-A-Bullie rescue and we’ve sent some Hansel Help to assist with medical expenses. This 2-or-3-year-old sweet girl was in the medical wing of Brooklyn ACC with skin issues and a wound on her foot, as well as some other needs. She was surrendered when her previous family could no longer care for her. She’s super gentle and affectionate and has lived with an 11-year-old child! We know she’ll continue to shine bright in a future forever home. PSST…SEE AN UPDATE ON STARBRIGHT IN HER FOREVER HOME HERE.
Starbright
We sent an urgent Hansel Help donation to new pit bull-focused organization Miko’s Rescue Mission to help them pull lovable Sancho from an LA-area shelter, where he was about to be euthanized. He’d been at the shelter for a month and a half. Sancho and another dog were dumped by their owner after getting into a fight with a third dog. But his rescuer calls him “a lover not a fighter” and he loves getting affection from people! The original plan was for him to stay at an Airbnb with a foster to decompress, but the rescue’s founder fell madly in love with him and decided his forever home was with her! We love a happy tail! PSST…SEE AN UPDATE ON SANCHO IN HIS FOREVER HOME HERE!
Sancho
Frankie was found wandering around in a parking lot in San Jose, covered in motor oil. He deserved a fighting chance and California Bully Rescue stepped up to save him, even though the petite bully needed a $20k heart surgery. We are honored to be one of several foundations and donors who chipped in to save his life and help his story have a happy ending despite the odds. PSST…SEE AN UPDATE ON FRANKIE IN HIS FOREVER HOME HERE!
Frankie
There’s nothing cheesy about our love for Babybel! The amazing Cat Republic rescued this senior gentleman from NYCACC earlier this spring. He was found stray and then spent three and a half months in a pop-up crate at the overcrowded city shelter, where despite being super easy and chill, he was overlooked until his rescue swooped in. He likely hasn’t had much medical care in his life, and he now needs some TLC before he’s ready for a forever home! We’ve sent a Hansel Help grant to help cover some of these vet costs — neutering, dental care, and a biopsy for an oral mass. PSST…SEE AN UPDATE ON BABYBEL IN HIS FOREVER HOME HERE!
Babybel
Move over, espresso — all we’re thinking about is Cappuccino and her ears and tongue that go in all directions! This small Rottweiler/Staffy mix was saved from Dallas Animal Services on her euthanasia deadline day by Hearts & Bones Rescue using their Hansel Help grant. She’s described as “super dog friendly” and has recovered beautifully from a case of flea dermatitis. Needless to say we love her a latte and can’t wait for her to be ready to find a forever home through Hearts & Bones!
Cappuccino
It’s a piglet, it’s a bunny, no, it’s Pilot! Check out this post to see his transformation from when Hearts & Bones Rescue first pulled him from Dallas Animal Services with help from their Hansel Help grant. He’s still undergoing treatment for his skin issues (likely caused in large part by mites) but has officially arrived in NYC and is available for adoption! He just needs some medicated baths and love to get him looking healthier every day — he’s come so far already. He’s approx. 2 years old and is a petite pittie mix at 35 pounds. How could he not make your heart soar?
Pilot
We gave the incredible, entirely volunteer-run Montana Pittie Project a grant to help cover expenses for the at-risk dogs they pull from Texas shelters then transport to loving foster and forever homes in Montana. Often, they decompress and heal in local fosters first. This sweet young guy is a petite pittie at 38 pounds. He has some patchy skin and had a rough go with pneumonia after coming out of the shelter. But when he’s feeling better and smiles, there’s nothing like it . This cutie loves watermelon and rope toys. Kane and the other two dogs below are currently with fantastic fosters in Texas!
Kane
Another recipient from Montana Pittie Project, Bruce is a squishy, super chill dude who’s stolen everyone’s heart. He’s heartworm positive, but thankfully negative for tick diseases even though he was absolutely covered in ticks when first rescued. He will also need surgery for a dislocated hip after being hit by a car . He’s been through so much but is still a chill, happy dude being so well cared for by his foster family.
Bruce
Montana Pittie Project saved this pretty puppy lady from the shelter where she was absolutely emaciated. She’s now a poster child for what simple love and care can do. In her foster home with a good diet, she’s gained weight and a shine to her coat so quickly. She loves to play with her foster brother!
Sammy (formerly Dolly)
Do lovers on social media fell in love with and were so worried about Cochise, a 5-year-old, 75 pound good boy who was past his euthanasia deadline at Downey. Thankfully The Pitty Committee and their amazing network in California have gotten him into a foster home. We’re honored to know that The Pitty Committee has used some of their Hansel Help grant to sponsor supplies for this happy, affectionate boy who happens to look so much like our eponymous Hansel.
Cochise (aka Cheese)
The beautiful Ivy is one of two dogs with medical needs the amazing Laila’s Legacy Animal Rescue was able to pull from Prince George’s County shelter in Maryland (a county with strict BSL — pit bull type dogs must be rescued or adopted outside the county) thanks to their grant, and we’re so thrilled! Ivy is a beyond special girl. She came to the shelter emaciated and with stress-induced skin issues but is doing amazing in her foster home. But the real miracle?? This tennis ball loving, strong lady has a microchip that was implanted 19 YEARS AND 8 MONTHS AGO. She is the absolute definition of a super senior. She would do best as the only dog in the home and is available for adoption for her golden next chapter! Frankie was found wandering around in a parking lot in San Jose, covered in motor oil. PSST…SEE AN UPDATE ON IVY IN HER FOREVER HOME HERE!
Ivy
Buster is the second lucky dog Laila’s Legacy Animal Rescue was able to pull from PG shelter in Maryland thanks to support for medical care from our Hansel Help grant. If you check out this link you’ll see a local news story about how this week, a shocking 34 DOGS were on the urgent list at the shelter (usual numbers are under 10, though the Laila’s team say these numbers aren’t unheard of towards the end of summer, when surrenders increase). Prince George’s County unfortunately has strict BSL and all pit bull type dogs must be rescued or adopted outside the county. Luckily, 31 pups were able to be saved, with Laila’s Legacy pulling six of them. Buster was one of these dogs, and he will require lots of follow up medical care. He has abscesses from where he was likely attacked by another dog and is understandably fearful (though he already started doing better with other dogs in the shelter). He’ll be going to the vet early next week to get an ultrasound, covered by Hansel Help, to figure out what’s causing blood in his urine. We’re so thankful he made it out and so is he, judging by that big smile! Paws crossed for this handsome dude.
Buster
Cherry Pie is one of the first dogs who’ll be benefiting from our LA-area spay/neuter voucher program with A Purposeful Rescue. This beautiful lady was living on the street, with fleas, very little fur, and a belly full of nine babies ready to pop! A local rescuer so kindly opened their home to her and she delivered her babies just over a month ago. Now, she’ll be getting her life-changing spay surgery through our grant on 8/30! She’s a sweetie with dogs, cats, and people. She’s a great mama who deserves to not have to be a mama again (she also apparently had a litter of 12 last year who were picked up by animal control, leaving her behind. A kind person experiencing homelessness had been feeding her and the other pups she was with). Thank you to all involved in getting her new life started, and reminder that pittie parents in the LA area who need help with spay/neuter, vaccine, and microchip costs can reach out to spayneuter@apurposefulrescue.org! Plus, three of her puppies are available for adoption via Yogi's House.
Cherry Pie
Freyja
Meet Freyja! She was rescued from Irving Animal Services in Irving, Texas by Hearts & Bones Rescue and was then transferred to Rain Or Shine Rescue to find her forever home. Our partner Hearts & Bones collaborated with Rain Or Shine and used some of their Hansel Help grant to help cover her medical care. After coming to the shelter emaciated, being rescued, and receiving heartworm treatment, this beautiful 3-year-old girl who gets along with other dogs, cats, *and* kids has now been adopted into her forever home, complete with doggy siblings! We love this journey for her and have hearts in our eyes that match the one on her nose. Honored to be a small part of Freyja’s legendary story. See more about Freyja in her forever home here!
Sparky
Smiley Sparky (who we think looks just like Toothless from How To Train Your Dragon) is safe! This handsome 9-year-old is the ultimate survivor. Black pit bulls are some of the most overlooked dogs in shelters and Sparky has survived not one, not two, but THREE LA-area shelters since 2018 as well as being confiscated from bad “rescue”/hoarding situation Woofy Acres. He has consistently been a volunteer favorite and Girls Who Love Dogs Rescue was able to save his life. We sent some Hansel Help to assist with boarding expenses and are so happy to see him free from the shelter. He has a full time foster starting jn November and it would be even better if he can find a temporary foster before then instead of going to boarding. Apply here!
Tupper
Tupper is the first pup saved through our partnership with Chicago’s One Tail At A Time (which happens to be where our beloved Hansel was adopted)! Tupper was found stray and brought to Chicago Animal Care & Control. He was immediately happy and friendly despite clearly having a rough previous life — he was very skinny and not quite sure what those “toy” things were. One Tail At A Time development manager Stephanie shares “Tupper was an immediate volunteer and staff favorite upon arriving at OTAT's ISO (In Search of) Foster House. He spent about two weeks there while receiving treatment for his various medical issues, which included an upper respiratory infection, happy tail, fly strikes on his ears AND a hematoma at his neuter incision site (his neuter was done by another shelter before coming to OTAT). Throughout it all he remained happy and playful!” After an adoption that ended up not working out through no fault of his own, Tupper’s now doing well in his foster home and searching for his perfect match.
Lily
Meet Lily, a true miracle hippo saved by Minnesota rescue The Bond Between and in hospice foster with @dashboard_doggos. In November 2022, Lily was diagnosed with aggressive mast cell tumors and given 5 months to live. Well, guess who’s still kicking in her loving hospice foster home??? Miss Lily, that’s who! We sent The Bond Between a grant to purchase Lily some items that will improve her quality of life and her hospice care, like an orthopedic bed and a ramp so she can still get in the car and go on adventures. She loves them! Apparently she has basically not left her new bed since she got it. We’re so happy to have made you happy, Lily!!
Doc McStuffins (formerly Jed)
Fan-fave Doc was rescued from the county shelter in Prince George’s County — where there is strict BSL — on his euthanasia deadline by Pennsylvania rescue Perfectly Paired Pitties. He’d been at the shelter since late July, enduring a fractured leg that entire time. We are so happy that he will finally be getting the vet care he needs and deserves and to say that we will be covering it with a Hansel Help grant. He has done amazingly well in his foster family that included kids and other dogs, and will be headed to a foster-to-adopt home soon.
Lady Diana
Regal girl Diana has found her forever home after being saved from the Downey euth list by The Pitty Committee with support from their Hansel Help grant. She was treated for a tapeworm before being transported to her primary foster. Here's what Alyssa, TPC's fabulous founder, has to say: "Diana is the sweetest girl ever. Miss Diana stayed at a temp foster down the street from me in San Diego until she made the trek with a private transporter up to her 'long-term' foster home in the Bay Area. Her 'long term' foster home was actually a rather short stay, and she was soon adopted by a friend of the foster. Diana's new family absolutely loves her! They have an adorable 5 year old daughter who has immediately bonded with Diana. In the days leading up to Diana arriving at her forever home, the daughter was so excited that she was taking naps in the dog bed to 'prepare for her arrival.' Too cute to handle!"
Lulu (formerly Meep)
Lulu is another beautiful beautiful beneficiary of our grant to The Pitty Committee. Like Diana, she has found her forever home after surviving the Downey euth list. Alyssa from TPC writes that she's a "1 year old, sweet-as-pie black pitty mix who found herself on the euthanasia list for NO good reason. She was transported up to the Bay Area where she had a wonderful foster waiting for her. Meep's name soon became Lulu. Her incredible foster Jay used to have an amazing dog named Cielo who looked a ton like Lulu. Sadly Cielo passed away not long ago, and Jay's heart had a big empty spot that needed to be filled. Although we weren't quite sure from the get-go if it was the right timing to adopt, it soon became clear that Lulu was home. The two are the best of friends and do everything together. Lulu gets to go on hikes, fun adventures to the beach (she even watched a doggy surf competition with her pitty friend from the sand!), and to doggy camp to play with friends and socialize. Her life is filled with love and hope. Your donation enabled us to send Lulu on a private transport up to the Bay Area. We were also able to fully vet her (her appointment was pretty expensive) and provide her with all the necessary meds + supplies. She is thriving in her happily ever after!"
Almond Joy
This beautiful 2-year-old is patiently awaiting her forever home and is adoptable through Chicago’s amazing One Tail At A Time Rescue, who used some of their Hansel Help grant to care for her. Almond Joy is well crate trained and housebroken, loves tug of war, and looks great in pink! She’d do best in an adults only home and is more comfortable around women. Her adoption fee has been sponsored by another amazing donor.
Roger
Also supported in part by our grant to Chicago’s One Tail At A Time, this gorgeous brindle 2-year-old is super friendly with other dogs, but very high energy! He is currently on medication for anxiety and would do best in a home with adults or kids over 12. He also does well with kitties!
Oreo
One Tail At A Time also used some of their grant to care for Miss Oreo, a long stay at the rescue. This super smart 7-year-old would do best as the only dog in an adults-only home. She’s had some medical needs and loves to snuggle! Plus, her adoption fee has been sponsored by a volunteer who adores her.
Maeve
Mushy cuddle bug Maeve also received support from our One Tail At A Time grant. She’s 4 years old with some special needs, like anxiety and two heart defects, meaning she is on medication and needs to keep exercise to a lower level. She loves to give kisses and carry her toys around, and she’s only 46 pounds! Her adoption fee has been sponsored by another amazing donor.
Emily
Emily is another long-stay pup whose care was partially supported by our grant to One Tail At A Time. Possibly a bunny, possibly a 3-year-old pup who wants to be “as close to you on the couch as possible,” Emily would do best in an adults only home without cats. Her adoption fee has been sponsored by another amazing donor.
Avocado
This senior dude (10 years old) is a long stay at Chicago’s One Tail At A Time who’d prefer to be the only pet. Our Hansel Help funds helped with his care. His bio on the One Tail site is adorable: “Don't let his Resting Grumpy Face fool you — Avocado is a happy, fun-loving guy! He does kiss on the first date but does so like a gentleman. His wiggle factor is off the charts and he's the first in line for a cuddle session. The way he bounces down the stairs will actually make you want to go outside during Chicago winters. He will be the last to get out of bed in the morning, and is an easygoing gentle giant who loves people and attention but is also fine to be left alone for a long nap. This boy is ready for his forever home!” His adoption fee has been sponsored by another amazing donor — holy guacamole!
Iceland
Okay, first we have to address that eyebrow. Iceland is truly a special girl, even if she may always look like she’s judging you! A portion of our Hansel Help funding assisted One Tail At A Time as they saved her from Chicago Animal Care and Control, helped her recover from an upper respiratory infection and being underweight, and got her happily to her forever home!
Shah
Half of our grant to One Tail At A Time was used for their Chicagoland Rescue Intervention & Support Program (CRISP), which provides aid so families can keep their pets instead of having to surrender them to the city shelter. Shah is one of five dogs who received medical care supported by Hansel Help through the program. Our One Tail contact shares, "Shah escaped from his yard and was hit by two cars, leaving him with a badly broken pelvis. His family was devastated and started a GoFundMe to try to raise the thousands needed to cover his surgery. Thanks to The Hansel Foundation and Kodiak Care funds, CRISP was able to cover the difference and ensure Shah got the surgery he needed." ❤️🩹 His family says "Shah is our son; my partner is a marine corps veteran and has helped him with his mental health and PTSD. Shah has helped me, a new social worker to the field, cope with the trauma and challenges of helping my community and clients I see on a regular basis. Shah has shown us what it means to be carefree, goofy, and unapologetically ourselves like he is."
Dolph
This handsome dude benefitted from our grant to One Tail At A Time and their Chicagoland Rescue Intervention & Support Program (CRISP) when he swallowed a ball — oops! — and his family needed financial support for the lifesaving foreign body removal surgery.
Foxy
The One Tail At A Time team writes, "Foxy's owner could tell something was wrong and brought Foxy to One Tail's Ellis Veterinary Clinic. While the clinic is not open to the public, OTAT's vet connected Foxy's owner with CRISP's services and Foxy was able to be seen and treated immediately and sent home happy and healthy." We’re so happy some of our grant funding was used for her care!
Itty Bitty
This adorable puppy was treated through CRISP (with support from our Hansel Help grant to One Tail At A Time) for an aural hematoma he developed after being bullied by his littermates. His family writes, "Our dog, Itty Bitty, is more than a pet; he's family. His unconditional love and loyalty have been a constant source of joy and comfort, especially for my grandchildren who live with me. We faced a heartbreaking moment when we feared we may not be able to afford medical services for our beloved companion. This assistance was a lifeline, and we are so grateful."
Isis
Chicagoland Rescue Intervention & Support Program (CRISP) — with support from our Hansel Help grant to One Tail At A Time — saved this gorgeous girl and allowed her to stay with her family. Isis was treated for pyometra — a dangerous infection of the uterus that is a medical emergency — when money was tight for her family as her owner was getting back on their feet after being laid off. Her human shares, "Isis is my first baby. She so sweet, gentle and pure. Her happiness to see me every day brings me joy. She’s been here for me in so many ways and I’m just as grateful for her as she is for me. I would honestly do anything for her. I have a daughter who’s 5 and they’ve been inseparable since before she could walk. Isis has always been so patient with her and all of her craziness. They eat together, sleep and cuddle together, she’s a part of our family. Not seeing her well hurts my heart honestly because I can’t imagine losing her, she means the world to me!"
Lolo
We originally gave PA-based rescue Perfectly Paired Pitties (aka P3) a grant for the medical care of the too-cute, now social media famous Doc/Jed, but thankfully his medical needs were not as extensive as feared. That means P3 was able to use their Hansel Help funding for the care of more pups saved from Prince George’s County, MD, where there is strict BSL and dogs labeled “pit bulls” must be rescued and adopted outside the county. One of them was this 6-year-old brindle beauty rescued in May; Hansel Help supported some of her remaining medical bills. Sarah from P3 shares "She was pulled from the PG urgent list [and] within a few hours of being in foster, we found out she couldn't breathe and took her to the ER where she was diagnosed with double pneumonia, a collapsed lung, and a broken tooth. Lolo has been undergoing treatment since. having X-rays every few weeks along with a variety of antibiotics. We finally got the ok in Sept 2024 that she could have the surgery to remove the tooth and be spayed, making her finally eligible for adoption." PSST…SEE AN UPDATE ON LOLO IN HER FOREVER HOME HERE!
Tiny
She may look like a puppy, but she's actually 2! She’s another sweet soul PA-based rescue Perfectly Paired Pitties (aka P3) saved from the PG urgent list and used Hansel Help to support her medical care. Tiny needed treatment for skin, ear, and respiratory infections. She's now decompressing in a foster home!
Kiyu
Miss Kiyu is a 2-year-old beauty and another beneficiary of the Hansel Help we sent to Perfectly Paired Pitties (aka P3) in PA. Kiyu was pulled from Prince George's County shelter in Maryland (where dogs labeled "pit bulls" must be rescued or adopted outside of the county because of BSL) last week. The shelter placed her on the euth list rather than treating her for her large hernia, infected cysts, and possible UTI. Now, P3 is making sure she gets the medical care, cute heart-print bandages, and eventual forever home she deserves. Thank you!!!
Titus
Fan fave Queens ACC pup Titus has been saved by AmsterDog Rescue and we are so grateful! We pledged a small donation to help with this beautiful 7-year-old boy. Titus was found tied to a store looking sickly and underweight. At the shelter, he was nervous and stressed and urgently needed out. We’re so glad a rescue and foster were able to save his life and give him the chance he deserves!
Sir Mixalot
Sir Mixalot was also supported by our partnership with PA-based Perfectly Paired Pitties (aka P3) Sarah from P3 writes "Mixy, who is 5, and his sister ended up in PG County [shelter] because their owner passed away. Sir Mixalot was unfortunately sick and placed in isolation. When he was finally allowed out of iso, he was listed for euthanasia. None of the rescues had met him or evaluated him because we aren't allowed to interact with dogs in iso. P3 was NOT supposed to be pulling that week, [but] no one was giving him a chance...so we said well let's make him a P3 dog, he deserves a chance at the good life. One of our team members ran to get him and kept him a few days until we could get him into another foster home and what we discovered was the most affectionate, good natured, even tempered boy we could have asked for. He loves to snuggle and only wants to be loved on and give love in return. He had to see the vet for a lump that needed to be aspirated and will be removed at his neuter surgery as well as needing an extension on meds for kennel cough."
Detroit
Beautiful Detroit was another Perfectly Paired Pitties (aka P3) last-minute save from PG County Shelter. Sarah shares, "Detroit we saved in July. She was doing well in her foster [when] we were told she was limping. After visit to the vet for bloodwork and xrays, we found out Detroit has two subluxating patellas. She had lost some muscle tone in the one leg and the vet said they didn't feel surgery was necessary but could be in the future, however she would need physical therapy. Detroit is now in a new foster home and doing well, we are looking at starting her PT soon."
Musa/Mufasa
Also supported by our Perfectly Paired Pitties grant, Musa is an extremely good boy. Sarah from P3 writes: "In September he was one of the last dogs on the urgent list and his face just called to me...I couldn't let him die. Our foster, raced to the shelter to pick him up and this poor little guy was nothing but happy and sweet. He only had a body score of 3, he was filthy and had a happy tail (where a dog is just so happy all the time the tip of the tail ends up bleeding from beating against the concrete). We [also] learned he was sick with kennel cough. He was seen at the vet and given antibiotics [and] had his tail examined as well as some other skin issues. The vet noted a lump on the top of his head which she thought could be the equivalent of a happy tail on the head... ie he got so excited to see anyone when he was in his kennel he banged his head. In October it hadn't gotten better and was totally free moving so we decided to have it aspirated, but because Mr. Mushu is so happy and wiggly they didn't get enough cells and we had to do it a second time. At this point they don't think the lump is cancerous but to know for sure it needs to be removed, and the vet feels unless it grows more removing it isn't necessary at this time."
Honey
Sarah from Perfectly Paired Pitties says "Honey, true to her name, is super sweet. When she showed up on the urgent list, everyone kept saying how sweet she is. [She] was spayed and had some trouble with her incision so we took her to the vet to make sure she was ok and there wasn't any sign of infection." She’s yet another pup our grant helped support.
Sunny
This sweet, easygoing 7-year-old was surrendered to NYCACC by a guardian who loved him but couldn’t afford his costly medical care. Sunny tore his ACL in the spring and his back leg looked like it needed to be amputated. Recently, shelter vets determined he also had cancer, likely osteosarcoma 💔. After 45 days at the shelter, he was saved by Ready For Rescue and is in the hospice foster he deserves with @zeus_york_city (who also fostered fan fave Hansel Help recipient Bruce!) We’ve sent a pledge to support his care, but Ready For Rescue will need more donations to care for him, so please consider giving.
Mickey
This beautiful senior is Mickey! He was on the euthanasia list at Queens ACC, where he and his pal Panda (still available for adoption!) ended up after their owner passed away. A team of superheroes acted fast to save 14-year-old Mickey and NYC Second Chance Rescue is now getting him the treatment he needs. He was hospitalized and received antibiotics and supportive care for advanced pneumonia, and now, miraculously, he is with an amazing hospice foster family who will give him the love he deserves. We’ve honored a small pledge for this sweetheart and NYCSCR is still fundraising for his care. Thank you to everyone who made sure Mickey got a happy ending!
