Partner Spotlight: Montana Pittie Project
We’re so excited to announce Montana Pittie Project as one of our 2024 grant recipients and share how they will be using their $5k in Hansel Help. This woman-founded, entirely volunteer-run rescue has saved over 700 dogs since 2020 and averages about 40 pit bull-type dogs in foster homes at a given time. Their strategy is to bring at-risk dogs from shelters in Texas to loving foster and forever homes in Montana, often after first decompressing and healing in amazing local foster homes. They have a fantastic and communicative network of volunteers, fosters, and adopters and are an incredible example of what focused, transport-centric rescue can be. One volunteer uses their personal van to bring approximately 10–13 dogs a month to Montana, where adopters are more readily available than in Texas. They run primarily on smaller, individual contributions — you can further support their work here (and check out volunteer Renee’s adorable treat bakery Bart N Biscuits here)!
MPP will primarily be using their Hansel Help grant for three special souls with medical needs — you can meet (and fall in love with) them below; all three are currently recovering foster homes in Texas. We also plan to collaborate with the MPP team to create online and social media resources combatting myths and stigma surrounding our beloved pitties.
Kane: This sweet young guy is a petite pittie at 38 pounds. He has some patchy skin and had a rough go with pneumonia after coming out of the shelter. But when he’s feeling better and smiles, there’s nothing like it . This cutie loves watermelon and rope toys.
Bruce: A squishy, super chill dude who’s stolen everyone’s heart. He’s heartworm positive, but thankfully negative for tick diseases even though he was absolutely covered in ticks when first rescued. He will also need surgery for a dislocated hip after being hit by a car . He’s been through so much but is still a chill, happy dude being so well cared for by his foster family.
Sammy (formerly Dolly): This puppy lady was pulled from the shelter emaciated, but is now a poster child for what simple love and care can do. In her foster home with a good diet, she’s gained weight and a shine to her coat so quickly. She loves to play with her foster brother!
